A little inspiration goes a long way! Well, I don’t know about others but there are days when I need that push, that extra motivation that I can do it. Thankfully, I have always had some powerful women around me (and, out there) who have inspired me with their words and actions. These women not only challenged the status quo in education, politics, business and life but also redefined the rules of the game in every industry. I believe, growing up and reading about such exemplary role models has been the biggest boon for girls of my genera-tion. Meet the women who inspired me to reach for better in 2018 and made me believe that “Nothing can dim the light that shines from within.”
Indra Nooyi
Well known for her intelligence and keen business acumen, Indra Nooyi etched her name in the annals of corporate history when she became the first woman CEO of PepsiCo, the sec-ond largest food and beverage company in the world. Nooyi’s journey has been phenomenal in every way. Leaving the “cocoon” of her family as she calls it to explore foreign territories wasn’t easy but thanks to her, so many girls today believe that they can achieve it too.
Michelle Obama
I have looked up to Michelle Obama ever since she became the First Lady. Not only has she been one of the most graceful First Lady ever, but also proved through her work including support for military families that she was more than just the US President’s better half.
So, when her memoir ‘Becoming’ published last year, I just had to read it. It’s one of those books that inspire you to defy all odds and do whatever it takes to become what you aspire to be.
Gudgudee Duo: Aditi Agrawal and Anjali Menon
Despite newer technologies and robust design materials, playgrounds in India still look the same as they did a decade back. But instead of joining India’s social cribbing culture, NID students, Aditi Agrawal and Anjali Menon took it upon themselves to design play experiences that were intuitive, inclusive, and accommodative for all kinds of children. Their creativity and drive are awe-inspiring and motivate me to give back to the society and create a better world around me.
‘Magnificent’ Mary Kom
Who says marriage and kids mean the end of a woman’s career? For me, Mary Kom and her achievements are proof that nothing can stop you if you believe in your dreams. A six-time world-champion, Mary is synonymous with patience and perseverance. She is perhaps the best sportsperson India has ever produced; and more importantly, even at the age of 36, she's still gunning for glory.
Priyanka Chopra
The last woman on my list is arguably one of the most successful Bollywood actors who has had a dream run from Bareilly to Hollywood. Besides her much publicized wedding to singer Nick Jonas, this 36-year-old former Miss World also made it to Forbes World’s 100 Most Powerful Women list in 2018.
The quality I admire the most in PeeCee is her greed, her greed to be successful and to have it all. “Be greedy, be hungry for your ambitions. Don't live on someone else's benchmarks. Who can tell you who you should be? Don't let anyone or any situation dictate to you who you are and who you can be,” is how she puts it.
