Artificial Intelligence now at your disposal!

Remember J.A.R.V.I.S. -the intelligently programmed virtual assistant of Tony Stark from the movie, Iron Man? Who would have thought that it would turn into reality someday? But com-ing straight out from the pages of science fictions and movies, we have J.A.R.V.I.S.-like Siri and Google Assistant at our fingertips today- the dream that we secretly held in our heart for so long!

Artificial Intelligence(AI) has become the most talked-about tech buzzword in today’s world, and knowingly or unknowingly, all of us are using some forms of AI in our daily lives al-ready.

But, it’s not as hunky-dory as it seems. Embracing AI technologies has been an extremely cost-prohibitive proposition for businesses which affected the democratization of AI to a great extent. Thankfully, this cloud has a silver lining. The rules of economics say that when something becomes cheaper, people are most likely to use more of it. For example, personal computers were almost non-existent until the 1970s. However, over the last three decades, they have not only become better but also a lot cheaper. The same holds true for all the technologies including AI.

Moreover, a flurry of mind-blowing technological advancements such as the availability of Big Data and advanced deep learning algorithms have contributed heavily to make AI a lot faster and smarter, while the plummeting prices of Graphics Processing Units (GPU) have made it more cost-effective. Tech giants like Intel, Amazon are working on to build new AI inference chips which promise to deliver high performance at low cost and hence could help businesses deploy AI in more cost-effective ways.

Also, unlike a few years ago, when only the likes of Google, IBM, and Microsoft, were domi-nating the space, there are a host of AI tools and technologies available now from an array of innovative startups that are challenging the status quo by all means.

Artificial Intelligence has the potential to outperform humans in certain domain-specific tasks, and the availability of cheaper AI tools will certainly take it a notch above its current application areas and help in building new use case scenarios. Researchers at the University of Heidelberg and Stanford University have shown that AI might be just as good or even bet-ter than doctors at detecting ailments. A recent study done in this regard showed how an AI program that was trained to detect skin cancer outperformed as many as 58 professional dermatologists.

The reality is that we are rapidly moving towards an era, where machines will work along-side humans to push the boundaries and unleash new possibilities. Today, a robot reception-ist can greet in you at front office desk, check your emotions and quickly adapt itself to ad-dress your queries in the right manner possible. The days are not far when machines will take over a bunch of mundane chores from our lives, in much the same way computer, smartphones, and wearables have eased up our lives in the last few years.
