A stone cutter was very dissatisfied with his life. One day he saw a rich merchant’s house & wished if he could be like that. To his surprise, just that moment, he became a merchant. Just as he was enjoying luxuries, he saw an official with attendants & guards. Even wealthy people were bowing to him. Seeing this, he wished to be the official & became one instantly. On one of his visits, it was too hot & looking at the sun, he wished he should be the sun. Being the sun, one day a huge cloud moved in front of him & his light could no longer reach earth. He thought the cloud is more powerful than the sun & wanted to be the cloud. But the wind pushed him & so he wished to be the wind. But the mountain stood still in strong winds. So he wanted to become a mountain. One day he saw a stone cutter cutting some of his rock & woke up from his dream.
Like the stone cutter, many of us see that life comes a full circle. In investing too, we start by running after instant gratification only to realise later that the time-tested process of investing regularly without breaks over long periods of time has a better potential to create wealth. We go through various avatars like the stone cutter, viz, try to time the market, we may dabble in stocks, derivatives, & many other asset classes to create wealth quickly. But the real wealth creators may have silently gone about their strategy by staying invested through thick & thin. They have faced losses multiple times & have even gained multiple times, but they haven’t succumbed to emotions of greed or fear or tried to time the market. In life or investments, remember that ‘Time is your friend & impulse is your enemy. Just stay patient, success will follow.’
