Even a Forest was once a Sapling
How much time does it take for an environmental shift to happen? The earth’s temperature did not rise by nearly 2 degrees Fahrenheit with few years of green-house effect. The world’s glaciers did not start melting with a year of global warming.
All of the above environmental changes happened with years and years of neglect and abuse of the environment and natural resources and it can be corrected only with years of consistent investment of time and effort. Like it did not happen overnight, it is not possible to undo the damage to the environment overnight. It will take years of effort and awareness to repair the harm that humans have wrought on the environment.
Three decades ago, a teenage Jadav Peyang, started planting Bamboo in an area that had been washed away by floods in Assam, after noticing the deaths of a large number of reptiles due to lack of a tree cover. Determined to make the planet greener, Jadav Peyang took the matters in his own hand and located a riverine island, on the banks of River Brahmaputra, and began to plant the saplings. Payeng visited the island and planted a few saplings every day for three decades. Today, the same land in Assam hosts 1360 acres of Jungle called Molai Forest, named after the man who made it possible single-handedly.
As impossible as it may sound, Padam Shri Jadav Payeng, The Forest Man of India, has proven that with continuous small efforts it is possible to make a big change in the long run. If consistent efforts are made towards conserving the environment, however small, they have the potential to change a wasteland into a forest. In the same manner, with regular investments of small amounts in a Systematic Investment Plan or SIP of mutual funds over a period of time, each sapling of investment will collectively grow into a forest of saving one day.
